Oh man, the Teraleak is just overwhelming in its content, and since it’s release I’ve just been trying to make heads-or-tails about what I’ve seen. I’ll probably NEVER get to access everything in it, but I’d like to at least carve out some interesting info out from it to add to the site.

This page covers ALL the Ruby/Sapphire Pokémon that had been created during June 2001 and November 2002, at least those found in the Teraleak file “HaveSomeFun__RandomFromBoxEnt\ポケモン_ルビー・サファイア”. Because this covers information during such a fluctuating design process, some info may overlap or contradict one another as the devs ironed out details about all of the new Pokémon being added to the “Advance Game Boy” era. But the overall goal is to get as much of all this data together into a single easy-to-start/hard-to-stop format so you can have a solid foundation of what’s going on… perfect for if you decide to make fanart or include these Pokémon in your RSE rom hack!

The documents used for this guide include (but not limited to):

  • ポケモンアンケトー (Pokémon Survey)
    • ポケモンアンケート_ver1.0 01.fp5 — “Pokémon Survey_ver1.0”, FileMaker Pro 5 file dated November 26, 2001; has all 113 sprites covered in the “Survey 20011126” column
    • 新ポケモン 投票.pdf — survey results for Pokémons #300-#360
  • ポケモンリスト (Pokémon List)
    • AGBポケモンリスト(02.04.20).xls — “AGB Pokémon List 02.04.20”, Excel list of current AGB Pokémon as of April 20, 2002
    • AGBポケモンリスト(02.05.14).xls — “AGB Pokémon List 02.05.14”, Excel list of current AGB Pokémon as of May 14, 2002
  • ポケモン図鑑テキスト (Pokédex Text)
    • ポケモンファイル_20020325.fp5 — “Pokémon File_20020325”, FileMaker Pro 5 file dates March 25, 2002; covers almost all details about the 50-someodd Pokémon plus artwork in the “Beta 20020325” and “MISC” columns, plus a few extras
  • 新ポケモンドットサンプル (New Pokémon Dot Sample; dot = pixel)
    • pm3b_300.pct …. pm3f_413.pct — Macintosh PICT files of front & back artwork of all 113 “Survey 20011126” Pokémon

I’ll try my best to point out if one document contradicts another document (or later data), but most of this info tends to just complement or fill in gaps in the others.

The below guide itself has the following format:

  • TYPE: what elemental type it has. Usually one or two, but some have multiple or vaguely referenced types.
  • NAME: the Pokémon’s name and Pokédex number. However, given that we’re peeking into Game Freak’s development process at different stages, names may differ as new ideas get tossed in
    • GREEN = Survey 20011126 data
    • ORANGE = Beta 20020325 data
    • LT. SAPPHIRE = AGB 02.04.20 list data
    • LT. RUBY = AGB 02.05.14 list data
    • Names in ALL CAPS are “official” Romaji pulled from documents, while normal names are official transliterations of their Japanese names.
    • I may reorder this list based on final Ruby/Sapphire data, or at least organize by evolutionary line (real or apparant).
  • SURVEY 20011126: Sprites from the first batch of 113 Pokémon
  • BETA 20020325: Sprites from the whittled down 50-something Pokémon after the original vetting period
    • Sprites for both SURVEY and BETA Pokémon show front view over the back view.
  • MISC: either artwork from the Beta 20020325 documents, or other sprites pulled from other documents
    • I may also include a “final release” column so you can compare Beta Pokémon with their Final counterparts
  • DEX: complete Pokédex data for the Pokémon that have it; it mostly covers Beta 20020325 Pokémon as limited data exists for the Survey 20011126 Pokémon. The Pokédex entries cover:
    • Pokémon type, Length, Weight (both in American Freedom Units + the original Metric values set by the devs)
    • at least two specific entries (A & B)
    • and maybe some extra details that didn’t make it into either A or B’s Pokédex entry (M)
  • NOTES: other info about that Pokémon, such as ultimate fate, Survey results, and anything else worth pointing out.

Anyways, I hope you enjoy this guide!

(STILL UNDER CONSTRUCTION!)

Eruption Pokémon. HT: 6’3″/1.9m. WT: 485.0 lbs./220.0 kg.
A: The hump on your back is a bone that has changed shape. As I get older, the bump gets bigger and bigger. In the end, you may not be able to move.
B: It’s a Pokémon with a laid-back nature. But once he gets fired up, he’ll spew out a million liters of gas.
Looks like this was the very first Pokémon they designed for Gen 3/”AGB”, since it’s regularly on the top of multiple lists. Survey Results: GOOD=9 / BAD=0

ヤマノヌシ (Yamanonushi)
274
コノハナ (KONOHANA / Nuzleaf)
GOOD=3 / BAD=2; “just like tengu, so scary”. Early Nuzleaf design. Leans HEAVILY into the Tengu look. I suspect that Shiftry’s prototype design—if we ever see it—would’ve equally leaned heavily into Kabuki (particularly the gigantic white hair look). But I’m no expert on this.

GOOD=2 / BAD=0; Boyatto survived up through the April 2002 list, but was scratched by the next month. Curiously, Boyatto was going to evolve from ANOTHER Pokémon (however nameless for now).

GOOD=2 / BAD=1; “I want to change the color”. … No, not Pii (ピィ; Cleffa’s Japanese name) but Bii! This one was killed off fairly early as little evidence exists for it beyond its sprite.

クロボッシ (KUROBOSSHI)
X
X
X
Black Stone Pokémon. HT: 1’8″/0.5m. WT: 50.7 lbs./23.0 kg.
A: Its expression is always the same, so I have no idea what it’s thinking. Being stared at makes me feel uneasy.
B: After the rain, it can be seen scrubbing its wet body with leaves to polish itself. It seems to feel satisfied when its is black in color.
M: KUROBOSSHI do have emotions; when they’re happy, they hop around, and when they’re sad, they lean forward. They have very stiff bodies.
Name comes from “Kuro” (black) and “Okiagari-koboshi“, which is a sort of traditional Japanese “Weeble-Wobble”. Potential English name: “Stonypoly” (stone + roly-poly). Survey ratings: GOOD=7 / BAD=0.

A:

Brutal Pokémon. HT: 6’7″/2.0m. WT: 180.8 lbs./82.0 kg.
A:
B:
Its name and stats changed slightly from Beta to Final (going from Sharken to Samehader). The April/May 2002 lists considered it the Basic form of “Shark Pokémon”; seems like Carvanha wasn’t designed yet.

Clay Doll Pokémon. HT: 4’11″/1.5m. WT: 238.1 lbs./108.0 kg.
A:
B:
Originally Psychic/Rock in the Beta material. Also, despite the THIRD name change, it’s obvious that this is part of the “Clay Figurine Pokémon” family. That said, its Basic form is technically unknown, so it could be KUROBOSSHI or something else. I’m considering it something else in lieu of direct evidence.

Its Pokémon type (こづれ/子連れ “kotsure”) means “carrying children” or “with children”… so “Child Bearing” is maybe the best word I could think of. Its name comes from 乳母 “uba” (nanny) and ウサギ “usagi” (rabbit). Possible English name: Lagonurse (lagomorph + nurse)

Everlasting Summer Pokémon. HT: 2’4″/0.7m. WT: 17.6 lbs./8.0 kg.
A: A Pokémon that thrives in warm areas. It does a lot of things in groups, and when three of them gather together, it becomes very noisy.
B: It is said that if you give a petal on BISKYAL’s head to your crush, your love will come true. However if you try to take their petal, they will get angry.
M: Born in a tropical country. Doesn’t like the cold. As long as the temperature is high, BISKYAL have the tenacity and toughness to survive even in places with polluted air. Selfish, self-centered personality. Maybe only female BISKYAL exist?
Name comes from “Hibiscus” and “Gal/Gyaru“. Potential English name: “Hibisgal”. Survey results: GOOD=5 / BAD=1, “too human-like, the word ‘gal’ is a bit off.”

Shrub Pokémon. HT: 4’7″/1.4m. WT: 154.3 lbs./70.0 kg.
A:

Its Pokémon type is simply the Japanese name for “shrub” (かんぼく/灌木 “kanboku”). Its name in turn is simply a deformation of the word “Kanboku”. Possible English name: “Shrubb”, or maybe just “Kanbok” outright.

Spirit Pokémon. HT: 0’8″/0.2m. WT: 3.3 lbs./1.5 kg.

Its Pokémon type is technically “Spirit” (せいれい “seirei”), but since it’s written in Hiragana, it could be just the generic 精霊 “spirit” or “soul”, specifcally the soul/spirit of someone who died, or the Holy Spirit 聖霊. Meanwhile its name is a mix between the word “fairy” (フェアリー) and the phrase “between the trees” (木と木の間).

A: SOHNANO always has a smile on its face. When it’s angry, he puts a pin on its tail. It flaps its tail and hits the ground.
B: Plays a game of shove until the middle of the moonlit night. It gets more and more patient when it’s being pushed around. A battle that involves some fierce counterattacks.
M: Sōnano always has a smiling face. When he’s angry, he puts a stick on his tail. He flaps the ground. He plays a game of push-and-pull in the middle of a moonlit night.
“Confirmed (appears in the fifth movie). The pre-evolution of Wobbuffet.” The RS Beta design guide has all kinds of great stories about it, like how you should never talk to yourself in a cave because it (or Wobbuffet) will respond to you with “That’s right!”, or that if an ogre steps on its tail it’ll swap places with it.

B: PIPER’s physical appearance has hardly been revealed. They have no mouthes or ears, but it is known that they respond to sound and light.
“Any evolved Pokemon.” Its name comes from the English word “pip”, which… I guess means “seed” but I’ve never heard it used as such. But it ties into the idea of it being a Pokémon that can permanently evolve into any other Pokémon, thus is the seed for all other Pokémon. Kinda like my Primitto theory!

White Dragon Pokémon. HT: 11’10″/3.6m. WT: 385.8 lbs./175.0 kg.
A:
B:
“The second stage of Kosoratori. (#330/307)” Here’s the weird thing; Kosoratori ended up becoming Swablu. This means this Pokémon is supposed to be Altaria. However, nothing about this is connected to Altaria aside it from being the Dragon/Flying evolution of Swablu. So I feel like Altaria ended up being something completely new and made from scratch. Still, I added Altaria’s sprite just to tag this connection. Its name is a form of the English words “light” and “line”. Possible English name: “Lighline” or “Leylign”

“A Pokemon for sand encounters.” Now this one is tricky to parse. TECHNICALLY this Pokémon’s name doesn’t exist anywhere before or after. However, since it ultimately evolves into Flygon, then obviously this would be Trapinch (either #337 パックン Pakkun or #314 ナックラー NUCKRAR). The problem is, Trapinch would ultimately keep its ナックラーNUCKRAR name, meaning who Guragon is actually the original Basic Pokémon in the original Beta Flygon line (#403 ヤッココ Yakkoko)? But that name is used on the Pokémon that evolved from Guragon. So who knows?

ヤルキモノ (YARUKIMONO / Vigoroth)
“The second stage of Sloth (Gorilla) Pokémon.” This one is interesting because it DIDN’T exist in the April 2002 list, but was added in the May 2002 list, implying it was added later.

ケッキング (KEKKING / Slaking)
“The second/third stage of Sloth (Gorilla) Pokémon. A Pokémon used by Dad. →Used in the moving event.” The April 2002 list called this the “Second stage” but the May list called in the “Third”, implying that the middle stage was added.

“The first stage of Boyatto.” Oh that’s nuts! Boyatto (#303/280) was going to have a Basic Pokémon form! Sadly both this Pokémon and Boyatto would not survive after April 2002.

オニゴオリ (Onigoori)

オニゴーリ (ONIGOHRI / Glalie)
This is interesting… Glalie was originally going to evolve from Nosepass! At least that’s what the May 2002 design doc said. Incidentally, neither Glalie nor Nosepass was included in the April 2002 list. How odd!
